The Excel & CSV Difference Checker compares two spreadsheets cell by cell and colour-codes every change: green for added cells, red for removed cells, and amber for modified values. It supports Excel (.xlsx, .xls), CSV, and TSV formats and handles multi-sheet workbooks automatically. It is useful for auditing data exports, reviewing report changes, or verifying that a formula update only affected the expected cells.
Upload original
Drop or click to upload your original spreadsheet (Excel, CSV, or TSV) into the left panel. Supports XLSX, XLS, CSV, and TSV — up to 10 MB per file.
Upload modified
Upload the modified version of the spreadsheet into the right panel.
Compare & review
Click "Compare Spreadsheets" and use the sheet tabs to review cell-level changes across each sheet.
- Hover over an amber (modified) cell to see the original value in the tooltip.
- If comparing a CSV against Excel, make sure the column order is consistent across both files.
- Large sheets with thousands of rows may be slow to render — trim to the relevant data range first.
Financial report reconciliation
Finance teams frequently export two versions of the same report — one from last month and one updated — and need to confirm exactly which figures changed. Upload both XLSX files and the cell-by-cell diff immediately shows amber-highlighted cells for modified values, so you can jump straight to discrepancies rather than scanning column by column. Multi-sheet support means you can check every tab of a complex workbook in one pass.
Data export validation after a system migration
When migrating data between systems, a common QA step is comparing a CSV export from the old system with one from the new system to confirm every record migrated correctly. Upload both CSV files and any row that differs will be highlighted in amber or red, with the original value visible on hover — so you can catch missing rows, corrupted values, or incorrectly mapped fields before go-live.
Auditing formula and formula-result changes
When a colleague updates formulas in a shared Excel model, it can be hard to tell whether the changes are intentional or accidental. Export both versions as XLSX, upload them here, and the diff will flag every cell whose displayed value changed — even if the underlying formula is not visible. This is a reliable way to confirm that a formula change only affected the cells it was supposed to.
Tracking inventory and price list updates
Product managers and procurement teams regularly receive updated price lists or inventory exports from suppliers. Upload the old and new CSV to immediately see which SKUs were added, which were removed, and which prices changed — without having to write VLOOKUP formulas or rely on Excel's own comparison tools, which require both files to be open at the same time.
Comparing survey or research data exports
Researchers who collect data in multiple waves often need to compare exports from different time periods. Upload two CSV exports from your survey tool, data platform, or database and see exactly which rows or values changed between collection periods — useful for detecting data entry errors, identifying updated responses, or confirming that a cleaning script only touched the intended rows.
